One of my 2019 goals is to reduce the amount of waste I generate. Have you heard of the “waste hierarchy”?
The waste hierarchy consists of actions you can take to reduce waste and improve waste management processes. It consists of what is called the “three R’s”:
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
The three Rs help cut down on the amount of waste we all throw away, thereby conserving natural resources and landfill space. (Read here: The ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ Waste Hierarchy)
In order to reduce the amount of textile waste I generate, I am going to not buy anything new in January. That means no browsing through the sales of Loft, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, J. Crew and Nordstrom like I usually do during my lunch hour. At least my mouse will get a break from all the clicking I do to add items to my carts. Haha.
It’s only Day 7 of this project, and I am struggling! It seems like all the retailers I love are having sales to tempt me. Dramatic, I know.
I’m going to do my best to not buy secondhand either. While thrifting does meet the “Reuse” criteria of the three Rs, I want to fully commit to this project.
So with this post, Nothing New January is now official!

Nice article! And great resolution 🙂 This reminded me of a podcast I listened to some time ago, it was about a girl who managed to fit ALL her yearly waste in only one big jar! It was incredible, really inspiring. Imagine she would go to buy yogurt at the farmers market carrying her own glass bottle because she couldn’t buy anything in packaging 🙂
