One of my 2019 goals is to reduce the amount of waste I generate. Have you heard of the “waste hierarchy”?
The waste hierarchy consists of actions you can take to reduce waste and improve waste management processes. It consists of what is called the “three R’s”:
The three Rs help cut down on the amount of waste we all throw away, thereby conserving natural resources and landfill space. (Read here: The ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ Waste Hierarchy)
In order to reduce the amount of textile waste I generate, I am going to not buy anything new in January. That means no browsing through the sales of Loft, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, J. Crew and Nordstrom like I usually do during my lunch hour. At least my mouse will get a break from all the clicking I do to add items to my carts. Haha.
It’s only Day 7 of this project, and I am struggling! It seems like all the retailers I love are having sales to tempt me. Dramatic, I know.
I’m going to do my best to not buy secondhand either. While thrifting does meet the “Reuse” criteria of the three Rs, I want to fully commit to this project.
So with this post, Nothing New January is now official!

Oh my, thank you so much for your kind comment. It really made my day. 🙂
Nice article! And great resolution 🙂 This reminded me of a podcast I listened to some time ago, it was about a girl who managed to fit ALL her yearly waste in only one big jar! It was incredible, really inspiring. Imagine she would go to buy yogurt at the farmers market carrying her own glass bottle because she couldn’t buy anything in packaging 🙂
Thank you! I think I read about her somewhere. That’s really incredible and inspiring. I would like to be able to do something like that eventually. Thanks for reading! 🙂
Love these classic pieces! That’s a great thing to strive for this month. I hope Nothing New January is going well and you’re almost halfway there! 🙂
Thank you, Jess! It’s been going great. I’ve been getting better about resisting temptation. I can’t guarantee that I won’t go nutso when it’s over though. Kidding! LOL.
This is a really nice and achievable goal to have, it is also on m my list ! xx

I know so tempting with these sales. One of my favorite stores is having a sale right now and I’m barely hanging on not to purchase anything hahaha
Oh my gosh… hang in there! You can do it! I’ve just been deleting sales emails without even opening them. Haha.
Amazing post darling, you look gorgeous

Thank you! A classic trench is definitely a wardrobe essential.
Such a great mission! This year I’m really focusing on buying fewer, better quality things instead of buying more!
That sounds like a great goal! I think once Nothing New January is over, I’ll do something similar to what you’re doing – buying fewer, better quality things.
